Pro-cyclists' Secret Weapon

Our patient Shelley Evans is having an epic 2010 season! Shelley is a regular at Marin Spine & Wellness Center as part of her regimen to stay strong and healthy:

“As elite athletes, we are always looking for ways to enhance performance and minimize the risk of injury. With Dr. Wood's help, I have found a new tool to use in my training, which I believe will lead to longevity and success in the sport of cycling."~Shelley Evans

Evans most recently won Stage 10 at the Giro Donne in Italy and the overall at the Nature Valley Grand Prix. She is the 2010 Gold medalist in the road race and bronze medalist in the time trial at the Pan American Games. This followed her win at the Tour of New Zealand and winning the criterium at the Tour of Gilo. Velo News calls her the “five foot assassin.”

Evan’s ultimate goal as a cyclist is to compete at the 2012 Olympic Games in London with members of her team, Peanut Butter & Co. Twenty12.

Who has Text Neck?

Look around you. How many people do you see texting, using cell phone, working on laptops? Are you reading this from your phone or laptop? How is your neck positioned? How is your posture?

In coffee shops, at tables in restaurants, at red lights in their cars, walking through the mall, in line at the grocery store, and even sitting in my reception area or exam rooms, I see people everywhere with Forward Head Posture (FHP) & Text Neck.

“Text neck” is on the rise. A Kaiser survey found that young people often spend in excess of seven-and-a-half hours a day using some form of mobile media.

Patients often come in to see me with neck pain, headaches, shoulder pain, or numbness and tingling into the upper extremity; which likely means they have FHP or “Text Neck”. Many of us have poor posture habits during daily activities.

So what is wrong with spending so much time with our heads
down? Unfortunately, where the head goes, the body will follow. If you have FHP, then you probably have rolled shoulders. With rolled shoulders, a concave chest can follow, and often a pelvic tuck. You might also suffer from low back pain. For every inch of forward head posture, it can increase the weight of the head on the spine by an additional 10 pounds.

Luckily, regular chiropractic care can correct and reverse “text neck.” I will hold you accountable and offer you exercises and techniques to keep your head upright.

Chappy Wood, D.C helps Olympic Hopefuls, Shelley Evans and Kristin McGrath, improve performance with cold laser treatments.

As elite athletes, we are always looking for ways to enhance performance and minimize the risk of injury. With Dr. Wood's help, I have found a new tool to use in my training, which I believe will lead to longevity and success in the sport of cycling." ~Shelley Evans, US National Cycling Champion

Our congratulations to Shelley Evans, recent champion of the Tour of New Zealand! Shelley has also worked with me over the years to stay strong and healthy, which has translated into her outstanding performance and continued success!

Pro-cyclist and 2012 Olympic hopeful,
Kristin McGrath is an excellent example of how having an amazing attitude helps you heal much faster.

On a training ride in early December, Kristin was thrown 30 feet in the air after being hit by a truck breaking her femur and a rib, and losing a lot of blood. Read more about her accident & recovery here
Less than 3 months later, Kristin is back in training with her team, The Peanut Butter & Co. TWENTY12 riders. Kristin and other teammates come to Marin Spine & Wellness Center to stay in great shape as they train for the 2012 Olympics. Cold Laser Therapy is used to help Kristin recover from her injuries so she get focus on her training.

“Through this whole experience I have learned that when bad things happen, it truly is your choice to allow a situation to remain a lemon or to make lemonade.”
Kristin said.

It is an attitude like this combined with her winning spirit that allows our work to be successful and Kristin’s body to heal itself with the help of modern technology.
